Did you know that a company can vote in Québec municipal elections?
In Quebec, companies cannot vote directly in municipal elections. However, a natural person may be entered on a municipality's electoral list as the owner of a building or occupant of a business establishment, even if he or she does not reside there.
Here's how it works:
✅ Who Can Vote?
You may be registered on the municipal electoral list if you are:
- The sole owner of a commercial property since at least September 18, 2025
- The sole occupant of a business establishment since at least September 18, 2025
- The designated representative of a company (legal entity) that owns or occupies a commercial property
In August, Élections Montréal contacts non-resident property owners by mail to inform them that they may register on the electoral list.
📝 How to Register Your Business
- Designate a representative: The business must pass a resolution to designate a natural person (executive or employee) who will vote on its behalf. This person must not already be registered personally in the same municipality.
- Complete the official form:
- Send the request: All forms, duly completed and signed, must be submitted before October 16 at 6:00 p.m. to the following address: elections@montreal.ca
💡 Why Is This Important?
This right allows you to vote where your business is located, on issues that directly impact your operations, your clientele, and your business environment.
